Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) & Venous Reflux

When vein valves fail to close properly, blood flows backward and pools in the legs. Over time this leads to CVI — pain, swelling and skin changes that are treatable when the source is corrected.

Vein Conditions

Venous reflux and Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) are closely related. Venous reflux occurs when the valves inside the leg veins fail to close properly, allowing blood to flow backward and pool in the legs. Over time, that reflux leads to Chronic Venous Insufficiency — a condition where the veins can no longer pump blood back to the heart efficiently.

As blood pools in the lower legs, pressure builds and causes pain, swelling and skin changes. Venous reflux is also one of the most common underlying causes of varicose veins.
